webbist-deactivated20101222 asked: I must comment on your recap post. You mentioned a few films that I completely disagree with.
Shutter Island is my favorite film of the year, hands down. It's Scorsese doing a Hitchcock film, which worked very well. Lehane's novel translates very well to screen. This is my favorite performance by Dicaprio, and the supporting cast is amazing. Scorsese even references Masaki Kobayashi's epic Kwaidan!
The Ghost Writer is Polanski best film since Chinatown. Ewan McGregor is in top form. Pierce plays the Tony Blaire role perfectly and the underrated Olivia Williams turns in an Oscar worthy performance. The movie flows very well and is always exciting. My second favorite after Shutter Island.
My third favorite of the year? Kick-Ass! It was so much fun! I loved the comic and I think the movie made all the right choices (aside from Dave getting the girl) so that the movie works. Great mixture of drama, comedy, and action. The movie never takes itself too seriously. I'm a comic book nerd so the premise hooked me right away. Awesome cast.
Date Movie was horrendous. It didn't work as a comedy or a action film. Carrell and Fey never really ice it into high gear and are never really funny. I enjoyed Marky Mark's role but that's about it. I'm certain I laughed more during Schindler's List.
How to Train Your Dragon was so average. The last good CGI film I saw was Monsters Inc (and I can't wait until the sequel ruins the films barely existent, if at all, legacy). Everyone does things one way. A kid that strays form the pack and does things his own, better way. People struggle. Kid's way prevails. I've seen it a billion times. Not a bad film, just all too familiar.
Keep up the good work on the podcast! If you haven't seen them already, check out: Youth in Revolt and The Crazies. They may be in my top ten if better films don't come out this year.
PS. Here's my review of Iron Man 2: http://www.webthecurmudgeon.com/post/566900047/iron-man-2
Hey webbist — thanks for the message!
Nice Iron Man 2 review — if you haven’t listened to the podcast yet, you’ll find that we agree on many points of the film.
It seems like we disagree most on Date Night, and that’s sad, but I assume it’s a movie that I enjoyed more than most. I can’t disagree on your points on Shutter Island (I greatly feel that I will like it more when I see it again and just relax…) and The Ghostwriter (although it’s not too much of a stretch to say it’s Polanski’s best since Chinatown)
Again, thanks for listening/reading and the message. I hope you keep doing these things :)
